Members of United Steelworkers Local 449 at the Huhtamaki foodservice and packaging products mill voted overwhelmingly on Sept. 25 to ratify a new three-year contract that includes strong wage increases, more vacation time to improve work-life balance and more.

Prior to passage of National Labor Relations Act, known colloquially as the “Wagner Act,” in 1935, there was no mechanism in federal law to govern union elections and require employers to bargain in good faith.

Last week, the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) announced that tens of thousands of longshore workers across the country are prepared to strike to win a fair contract with their shipping employers represented by United States Maritime Alliance (USMX).

Members of IATSE Local 114 recently ratified a new contract with the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland that increases their compensation package by 50 percent over the course of the contract. The contract will provide a significant raise to the union’s lowest paid workers.
