The Maine AFL-CIO mourns the passing of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson. He was beloved by Maine workers, especially after he visited Jay, Maine in October, 1987 to offer his support and solidarity to 1,200 striking International Paper workers.

When the Portland Firefighters finally got organized again after losing their union in 1922, a bloody world war had broken out in Europe and Asia. For many years, they had struggled to maintain their pay and benefits they had as municipal revenues shrank during the Great Depression.
