The Maine AFL-CIOis seeking a dynamic

Workers at the Starbucks coffee shop on Middle Street in Portland are scheduled to have their union election with the National Labor Relations Board on Monday, Oct. 17.

In 2012, AFSCME Council 93 member Phil Newth, a corrections officer at Maine State Prison, took to the airwaves to oppose the LePage administration’s mistreatment of public employees.

Union members have been pounding the pavement hard in Kennebec County to talk to voters about House District 56 candidate Kent Ackley, Senator Craig Hickman, who has been a champion for labor causes in the Maine Legislature and Governor Janet Mills.

Last week, several hundred high school students attended Maine Construction Career Days. The United Association of Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 716 was on hand to give students direct exposure to welding and the pipe trades.

Governor Janet Mills has appointed former Maine AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer Ned McCann to the state Unemployment Insurance Commission, which handles appeals of unemployment eligibility decisions and job training programs.
