On Monday, union members from across Maine attended our Labor Civics Training at the University of Southern Maine in Lewiston. In the all-day training, we discussed working class representation in culture and politics and the role of art and culture in building movements.

A Central Labor Council (CLC) is a “union of unions” in a region, whose focus is on common interests of those unions including solidarity actions, events and community service. CLCs are a regional AFL-CIO body and are directly affiliated to the National AFL-CIO.

Since its earliest days, the AFL-CIO has argued that the dignity and freedom of working people are fundamental human rights, aligning our mission with the principles later enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Today, those rights are under attack.
