The United Steelworkers Tri-State Labor Council held its annual conference on October 22 at the Bangor Grande Hotel. About 22 members from Maine and New Hampshire were in attendance. Guest speakers included Sarah Bigney McCabe (Maine AFL-CIO), Patrick Carleton (USW 4-9 retiree), Duane Lugdon (retired Staff Rep), and State Auditor and Congressional candidate Matt Dunlap. Members from each local also gave their reports on the state of affairs at their workplaces.

Matt Emmick from the University of Southern Maine’s Scontras Center provided a very interesting history session about the strike that took place at the Fraser Paper mill in Madawaska in 1971. The Tri-State Council’s next conference is planned for next April where they will work on expanding into the Tri-State format, which includes Steelworkers locals from New Hampshire and Vermont.
