The Scontras Center for Labor and Community Education is hosting a presentation with Jay Strike Mural artist Andrea Kantrowitz at the Local 14 Solidarity Center on September 27 from 9am to 3pm. The event, Public Art and Popular Movements, will include former Jay paper mill workers, current union members and students from the University of Southern Maine coming together to learn about the legacy of the 1987-88 International Paper Strike as depicted in the mural that has adorned the Local 14 union hall for nearly 40 years.

Kantrowitz is coming from New York to discuss why she got involved in the strike and painted the mural. Students will have a chance to talk with former mill workers about the role the mural played in their lives during the strike and the impact art has today. The day will end with a presentation by USM Art Professor Janna Arhndt on the role art has played in people's movements throughout history.

The event is part of a larger project to study and commemorate the Jay paper strike's 40th anniversary and the transformation of the old union hall into the Local 14 Solidarity Center.
