Public Hearing on Bills to Address Chronic Understaffing in State Government — Mon. May 5

The Legislature’s State and Local Government Committee will hold a public hearing on LD 1265, LD 1539, and LD 1744 on Monday May, at noon. These bills will improve recruitment and retention, help address chronic understaffing throughout Maine State Government and work to close the state employee pay gap.
LD 1265:An Act to Amend the Laws Governing Public Employee Market Pay Studies and Comprehensive Reviews of the Classification Plan for State Service Positions:
This bill ensures that the upcoming compensation and classification study is fair, independent and gets the State the needed data to improve its system.
LD 1539: An Act to Create a State Employee Compensation Stabilization Fund:
This bill would create the State Employee Compensation Stabilization Fund to capture excess budget resources for the purpose of working to close the State Employee pay gap.
LD 1744: An Act to Modify Provisions of the State Civil Service System Governing Employee Recruitment and Retention:
This bill modernizes the recruitment and retention stipend process in state government so that Maine can make progress to attract employees and address chronic understaffing.
