Members of the American Postal Workers Union (APWU), other union members and community supporters rallied in Portland and Bangor on Thursday against efforts by the Trump administration to privatize the US Postal Service. Postal workers leafleted at rural post offices up and down the coast. The events are part of a Day of Action as postal workers and members of the community make their voices heard nationwide to say, “Hands Off Our Public Postal Service - The U.S. Mail Is Not For Sale!"For more videos and photos visit our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Last month, President Donald Trump announced that he is handing oversight of the US Postal Service over to his Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, even though the USPS is an independent agency that is supposed to be overseen by a nine-member board of governors. At Lutnick’s swearing-in ceremony, Trump told reporters that is considering a “form of a merger” of the Postal Service because it is supposedly losing “massive amounts of money.” In December, Trump said privatizing the USPS is “not the worst idea I’ve ever heard.” The President’s billionaire advisor Elon Musk has called on the US Postal Service to be privatized. DOGE and Postmaster General Louis DeJoy are also planning to cut 10,000 workers and billions of dollars from the U.S. Postal Service budget.

Most recently, USPS Postmaster Louis DeJoy has announced that he is working with billionaire Elon Musk’s DOGE team to cut another 10,000 postal jobs. This comes on top of slashing 30,000 postal jobs since 2021.
