On May 1, Workers will be holding rallies in Bangor and Portland as part of International Workers' Day, also known as May Day. May Day is a global celebration of the working class that commemorates the struggles and achievements of the labor movement. The day is a time to honor workers' contributions, advocate for our rights, and promote social and economic justice.

Educators with the Maine Education Association will be holding a rally at Bangor High School Parking Lot from 4 to 5pm on May 1st. The MEA members will be joining workers across the nation to take a stand for our families, our public schools and our communities.

Community members including any union members are invited to join the teachers in the parking lot at Deering High School, King Middle School or Rowe Elementary School in Portland at 7:45am on May 1st for a short gathering to show community solidarity on May Day, after which teachers will go into the school to work and others can go on with their own days.

The Maine Service Employees Association (MSEA-SEIU 1989) will also be holding a May Day rally on the steps of Portland City Hall on Friday, May 1, to call on the Mills administration to negotiate a fair contract for executive branch employees.

What: MSEA May Day Rally For Fair Contract

Date: Friday, May 1, 2026

Time: 5:15 pm

Location: Steps of City Hall, 389 Congress Street, Portland

Executive branch workers have been without a contract for 10 months. MSEA members will also be raising awareness of our labor disputes, including advocating for a living wage for our adjunct faculty, addressing unsafe facilities and working conditions, and highlighting the ongoing staffing shortages they face as they try to serve the public.
