IATSE 114 Helps Make the Maine HS Hoops Tournament a Success

The Maine High School Hoops Tournament Championships wrapped up in late February with Portland High defeating Camden Hills 76-60 for the boys’ Class A title and Cheverus pulling off a stunning comeback to defeat Hampden Academy for the girls’ Class A title at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. Members of IATSE 114 played a major role in making both events run smoothly as the union has a contract with the venue. About ten IATSE members staffed the event, operating cameras and providing camera, shadow, audio, graphics and lights for the game.
“Maine Public and the New England School of Communications did all the camera work, but because camera work is covered in our contract, we got cover positions. For every one of their cameras, we had an operator on our end even if they were just there to be on standby if needed. We also had cable pages too for the roaming cameras,” said Local 114 Business agent Devon Medeiros, who provided audio for the events. “It wasn't a ton of positions, but you know, it's all the stuff that we have locked down via our contract, which is great.”
But one of the Local 114 members was unable to do tech work at the Class Boy’s tournament. That’s because Local 114 member Joe Giordano is also an assistant coach for the championship winning Portland Bull Dogs!
