Last Friday, Carpenters Local 349 & 352 held their annual Tax Fraud Day demonstration at Thompson's Point in Portland. Gubernatorial candidate Troy Jackson was there to show his support for the workers. The event was part of a series of coordinated protests and awareness events held annually in April to fight construction industry tax fraud, misclassification of workers, and wage theft. The action target contractors who avoid paying billions in taxes by operating under the table. These campaigns have helped influence state laws, increase investigations into tax fraud, and create awareness about the $8.4 to $10 billion in tax revenue lost nationally every year due to these illegal practices.

"Misclassification of employees/tax fraud remains our number one concern in the construction industry," Local 349 said in a statement. "Thank you our active members who work hard all day then help expose this issue on their own time and Troy Jackson for stepping up once again to support working people in Maine. Remember who showed up to support you on Election Day this June 9."
