We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of Bangor Firefighter William “Billy” Van Peursem, who died Wednesday evening after taking his own life. Van Peursem was hired by the Fire Department in 1989 and most recently served as the Lieutenant on Engine 5 assigned to "B" Shift.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our Brother Billy Van Peursem firefighter from Bangor Fire Department," the Professional Fire Fighters of Maine wrote in a statement. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and all the members of IAFF Local 772 during this incredibly difficult time. His bravery, dedication, and service to the community will never be forgotten. We stand together in mourning as we honor his legacy and support one another in the face of this profound loss. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers."

"If you knew Billy, you knew he was rough around the edges. What Billy lacked in finesse, he more than made up for in his commitment to the fire service and his love of the job. I liked Billy very much and wish I had more time to get to know him," said Fire Chief Geoffrey Low in a statement. "We are working with Billy's life partner and family to understand his final wishes and ensure they receive support through this difficult time."

A celebration of William Van Peursem's life will be held on Saturday, May 3rd, from 1pm to 4pm at the Bangor Elks Lodge (Odlin Rd, Bangor). Please bring photographs and written memories to contribute during this time of reflection. If you are unable to attend, you may email memories or photos to Patsy at poversmith@chcs-me.org prior to the event. In lieu of flowers, the Bangor Professional Fire Fighters will accept donations in William's memory. Contributions will go directly to his family to support them during this challenging time.
