Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday held on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. Although enslaved workers in the South were legally emancipated on January 1, 1863 with the Emancipation Proclamation, it wasn’t until June 19th, 1865 that enslaved people in Texas learned the news and were freed. The day came to be known as Juneteenth. Attendees are encouraged to bring one fact about Juneteenth to share along with a potluck dish to the picnic.
