Summer Institute 2026

We are excited to invite you to the 2026 Maine AFL-CIO Labor Summer Institute! The Summer Institute is a two-day solidarity school, held in partnership with the Maine AFL-CIO, Maine Bureau of Labor Education and the Scontras Center for Labor & Community Education, where union members come together to meet each other, learn new skills and build our power.
This year's Summer Institute will be held August 5-6, 2026 at the University of Maine in Orono. This year's theme is "Where the Rubber Meets the Road II: Stewards and Unions in a Changing World." The program will focus on the issues facing stewards and the role of stewards in building a strong movement. It will feature a mix of discussions, educational presentations, labor history, participatory workshops, arts and culture and skill building. Stewards as well as other members will get a lot out of the program.
We are also excited to welcome:
- An international delegation of Korean Trade unionists. These unionists were instrumental in stopping an authoritarian takeover of their country.
- David Huerta, President of SEIU California State Council and a national union leader in the fight for immigrant rights.
Is someone from your union attending? Are you able to attend? I think you will have a great time!
We hope that you will join us this summer as we work to build a stronger labor movement. This is a great leadership development opportunity for new and seasoned union stewards, members and allies alike.
