New Scontras Labor Center Maine Labor History Course Begins March 7

The Scontras Center for Labor & Community Education is launching a new six-week course next month that provides an introduction to the rich labor history of Maine and situates local struggles within broader national movements. The course will examine turning points such as the 1937 Lewiston-Auburn shoe strike, Bath Iron Works battles, the 1987-88 Jay Strike, and the wave of recent organizing efforts in health care and food service. The course is geared toward union members, community members, and students who want to connect the past to today’s challenges and deepen their understanding of labor’s role in Maine.
This class is geared toward busy working people. It will have minimal work outside of class, but will require robust engagement in class.
