The reading group is finishing up reading Winant’s first book, "The Next Shift," which investigates the rise of the service economy following the decline of manufacturing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It discusses how the health care sector came to dominate the economy in many parts of the Rust Belt and how care workers, who are overwhelmingly women and people of color, might translate the increasing recognition of their economic value into political power.
