Last week voters in Wells voted to support two warrant articles that will dramatically strengthen fire service in the community by funding a full-time assistant fire chief and four full-time firefighters/paramedics. Wells Professional Firefights (IAFF 4652) organized a campaign and made videos to persuade Wells voters to support the two warrant articles, which they said would allow the fire department to staff a whole new shift and help boost recruitment and retention of firefighters by establishing a competitive working schedule in line with other Maine communities.

IAFF 4652 President Jeffrey Cullen called the addition of a full-time assistant fire chief and four full-time firefighters/paramedics "a significant step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of our community.”

“The recent Wells EMS/Fire Department Study highlighted the need for additional personnel, and these positions will address that need. Moreover, the current shortage of first responders nationwide makes it challenging to attract and retain qualified firefighters and paramedics,” said Cullen in a statement. “By offering competitive wages and work schedules in line with other communities in Maine, we can attract and retain the best professionals, ensuring the highest level of emergency services for our residents.”

Cullen added that the adding to the assistant fire chief will significantly enhance the department's capabilities.

“With increasing training requirements and professional duties, having a dedicated liaison between shift personnel and the fire chief will streamline communication and improve overall efficiency,” said Cullen. “The assistant chief will also serve as our training officer, ensuring we receive the necessary training to stay prepared and comply with regulations. As an additional responder during emergencies, their involvement in the operations division will provide greater control and coordination during more significant incidents.”

Congratulations on your campaign victory, Brothers and Sisters.
