Union Construction Academy Accepting Applicants for June Session
We are currently accepting applications for our next sessions of the Union Construction Academy. The first one is coming up in Portland on June 10, and we will be offering our first session in Central Maine at IBEW 1253 in Newport, beginning on July 22. Anyone who is interested is encouraged to fill out an application.
The Union Construction Academy provides a first step into careers in Maine Building and Construction Trades Unions for people who are historically underrepresented in the construction industry, including women, people of color, individuals with disabilities, immigrants, and justice involved individuals. During our four-week intensive training, pre-apprentices gain industry recognized credentials such as OSHA-10, First-Aid/CPR, Flagging, Scaffolding User, Asbestos Awareness, and Confined Space Entry. They also develop a range of hands-on skills and work on their construction math, and learn about the wide range of different trades and the benefits of Union membership. We practice interview prep and work on financial literacy, and we help our pre-apprentices to cultivate good work habits that will help them to succeed on
For our upcoming session in Portland, we are especially interested in recruiting students right out of high school who are looking for a great opportunity to get a head start on a great educational opportunity and a new career. Our Newport session specifically aims to provide a pathway for women into registered apprenticeships with Maine Unions. You can help us to get the word out about these two upcoming sessions by connecting us with Vocational Tech programs, Guidance Counselors, teachers, and administrators in local schools, as well as organizations that serve women in Central Maine.
