Tell the ACLU of Maine to Negotiate a Fair Contract with Its Employees
Unionized staff at the ACLU of Maine are calling on the organization to settle a fair contract with them. ACLU of Maine staff voted in 2020 to form their union with the Maine Service Employees Association/SEIU Local 1989, but negotiations been slow to progress. ACLU management has maintained its opposition to any fair pay structure since negotiations hit a stalemate last July when management refused to agree to a fair and equitable pay scale.
The structure of the staff’s most recent pay scale proposal is based on contracts between employees and ACLU chapters in other states but management has continued to dig in, showing little to no movement around key issues of fairness and equity for months. The majority of these employees include staff who are African-American, LGBTQ+ and people of color. It’s time to let ACLU of Maine know that it needs to live up to its own values.
