Solidarity Harvest Delivers Over 1600 Food Baskets to Mainers in Need
The 20th Annual Solidarity Harvest distributed a whopping 1623 baskets for Mainers in need this past Thanksgiving. Organizers say that union members and other community volunteers were critical to the success of the event, which is organized by Food AND Medicine (FAM) and the Eastern Maine Labor Council.
“We couldn't have assembled and distributed all of those boxes without the dozens of hard working volunteers who lugged, weighed and sorted produce; counted and then counted again; drove; cleaned and all the other things that pushed us over the finish line,” FAM staff wrote in an email.
Numerous generous donors contributed funds to purchase $60,000 worth of food from Maine farms and food producers to fill the food boxes.
“FAM purchased food for 1,600 meal baskets and with the extra produce we had, we were able to get out an additional 23 baskets,” the event organizers continued. “This is 123 more baskets than last year, and this is our 20th year; everyone involved in this massive project should be super proud!”
