The City of Portland has the largest professional fire and emergency medical services department in the State of Maine. 220+ sworn members work around the clock to protect the City’s nearly 70,000 citizens.

Last week, WGME reported that six new Portland firefighters graduated after several weeks of training. Two of the new probational firefighter/EMTs were "lateral transfers" from other towns and four are all new to the job.

"My dad and my older brother are both members of the department. I didn't originally plan on joining the department coming out of college, but I had been working for a few years and just felt like I missed being on a team and the brotherhood and the family, and I was very fortunate to see the fire department fill the role in both of their lives, so that really made me consider that this is something that I wanted to do,” graduate Connor Goodall told WGME.

The Portland fire chief told WGME that the public safety departments in general are seeing lower numbers of people signing up, so it was good to see the interest from these six recruits.
