The University of Maine Graduate Workers Union held an International Workers Day celebration in Orono on Saturday, April 29. Speakers included State Senator Mike Tipping (D-Orono, Jack McKay of Food & Medicine and workers from around the state, including members of Little Dog Workers United and Orono Town Workers, who are currently in the process of trying to form a union. You can watch of a recap of the event including speakers and music here.
Members of Little Dog Workers United at the Little Dog cafe in Brunswick held a solidarity sip-in and labor history presentation on May 1.
Customers who attended the Little Dog event reported that they could taste the solidarity!
“Attending the Little Dog workers’ May Day solidarity event was a great way to spend a rainy Monday morning! It was a pleasure connecting with fellow working-class folks on the holiday and chatting with the baristas about organizing. Plus, union-brewed coffee tastes better!“ - Bronwyn C., customer/union supporter.
“When I moved back to small-town Maine after spending a couple years in a big, progressive city, Little Dog was a comfortable, fun place to exist as a queer woman. I came in the other day to support their union work because towns like Brunswick (and all across America) need this kind of social and economic progressivism. I want to be a part of a community that raises up their workers and fights for their right to be treated fairly and equally ❤️.” - Titania W., customer/union supporter.
