More Pro-Labor Bills Become Law
Three more of priority labor bills became law this week. Here's the run-down:
Governor Janet Mills has signed into law LD 1816, our bill to strengthen labor education in Mainesponsored by Speaker Ryan Fecteau. The bill will establish and fund a new Labor education center at USM and will increase the capacity of the Bureau of Labor Education.
Governor Mills also signed LD 177, sponsored by Rep. Scott Cuddy, which strengthens apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs by providing $300,000 in ongoing funding and reimbursements. This bill is critical to opening up more opportunities for union careers.
LD 1916, which will help fund the legal costs associated with challenging harmful rope regulations in the lobster industry has become law without the Governor's signature. The Maine Lobstering Union (IAM 207) worked hard on this bill to support lobster men and women in the industry.
