Auburn firefighter Michael Scott (IAFF 797) officially became President of the Professional Firefighters of Maine this week. Scott, who also serves on the Maine AFL-CIO Executive Board, was elected as President in September to succeed Michael Crouse as the IAFF association president. He will also be in charge of the organization’s Legislative and Political Affairs. Scott said his priority as president will be to get more members involved in the organization.

“We’ve got a few new younger members on our executive board, but there is a bunch of us who are getting closer, or even in retirement and we’re going to try to get more people in involved,” said Scott. “We had some really good turnouts during our last couple of quarterly meetings, but prior to that we couldn’t get a quorum.”

Scott joined the Auburn Fire Department in 1996 and is currently a Battalion Chief/EMT assigned to “A” Battalion. He has served his union, IAFF Local 797, either as President or Vice-President for twenty years. He served as the 3rd District Vice President of the Professional Firefighters of Maine from 2006 to 2020 and as the Secretary of the Professional Firefighters of Maine from 2020 to 2024.

PFFMaine has grown substantially in recent years, having doubled the number of IAFF locals from 21 to 42. Scott said many of the new locals are small, but others have grown with additional staffing.

“They were previously volunteer departments that were hiring professionals,” he said. “They’ve been hearing about the work the state organization has done and the good things we’re getting passed.”
