Members of Machinists Local S6 at Bath Iron Works are preparing for another round of contract negotiations as their current contract ends in August 2023. In a message to members about bargaining preparations, newly elected Local S6 President Chris Williams quoted the words of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress,” and announced that union leadership is transitioning “away from the old way of doing business.”

“We are blazing a trail for a new way of working with the membership by prioritizing the concerns of our members and seeking feedback,” wrote Williams. “We are getting new members involved in the lodge to bring in new ideas and get out on the deck plates so you can meet us. If you have a problem, we want to know.”

Three years ago, the 4,300 production workers in IAM Local S6 won strong job protections against expanded subcontracting and preserved seniority rights after a ten-week strike.

Williams added that there is a strong sense of camaraderie among the union leadership team that will be key to the union's success in negotiations. He added that there are plenty of opportunities for rank and file members to get involved and strengthen their union.

“Solidarity is grown through our actions more than our words,” Williams wrote. “If the 2020 strike taught us anything, it is that we thrive off unity. We will do our best to keep you informed about opportunities to be of service. I look forward to working with you all.
