Machinists Local S-6 Members Assist Disabled Veteran, Support Homeless Vets
The following report comes for Machinists Local S-6.
The Local S6 Veterans Committee assisted a Disabled Vet from South China. The Vet’s yard was littered with large trees that had fallen over, one of which was on his house and another destroyed his fence. He had been seeking help to no avail.
Luckily, he ran into Local S6 President Chris Williams at a gas station. Williams saw him struggling to lift gas cans into his vehicle and offered to help. The gentleman shared about the trouble at his house and Chris decided to connect him with our Veterans Committee.
The committee took two trips to the house to move, cut, and split the wood on the property. The homeowner decided to donate all the wood to an elderly neighbor who was in need. They then repaired his fence so he could resume letting his dog out into the yard. With some brush removal and a good raking the yard was as good as new.
The Local S6 Veterans Committee was also out supporting the Maine VA Homeless Veteran Mobile Stand Downs last month. They were present for a number of events across the state. The Committee grilled burgers, hot dogs, and sausages to hand out, free of charge, for any veteran in need.
The Homeless Veterans Mobile Stand Downs provide resources to homeless and at-risk vets in the state of Maine such as: housing resources, healthcare services, employment & training opportunities, personal care items, winter clothing, haircuts, food and other community resources.
