Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA) Local 976 has affiliated with the Maine AFL-CIO. The 160 members of the New Hampshire-based local, including 15 members residing in Maine, primarily work at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant and at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire. Local 976 members also works with LIUNA Local 327 on various construction projects in southern Maine.

“We’re a little bit different from other LIUNA locals in that our members need to have secret Department of Defense clearance because they’re working on nuclear submarines and doing a lot of Department of Defense work,” said LIUNA 976 Business Agent David Spechuilli.

Spechuilli said the local is currently seeking to fill fourteen positions for a contract with Portsmouth Naval Shipyard that runs until September of this year. The union has negotiated a pay scale with a $5 hourly premium starting at $29.50 an hour.

“We’d love to find some people who wouldn’t mind getting their Department of Defense security clearance,” said Spechuilli. “We have a government contract for the next five years so we’re going to have fairly steady work for hopefully the next five years. You can jump on and potentially never leave the Navy Yard and get vested in the pension.”
