The Maine AFL-CIO Readers hope you’ll join us (by Zoom) on Thursday, August 24, 5:30-7 pm as they meet with Lane Windham to discuss Knocking on Labor’s Door, her book about labor organizing in the 1970s. As in the present, waves of newly energized workers —Black workers empowered by civil rights struggles, women fueled by feminist anger, public sector and hospital employees newly given the right to organize — challenged an often hidebound labor bureaucracy to meet their needs. Bosses increasingly used lawyers and consultants to turn labor law into a weapon against organizing. You can register to participate on the Maine AFL-CIO Reading Group website.

At the Reading Group webpage you can find a list of books we’ve read or nominate one you’d like to read with us. Maine AFL-CIO Readers range from student workers to union veterans. What we share are intellectual curiosity, an interest in learning more about the labor movement, and a commitment to respect and support for one another. We normally meet on the 4th Thursday of the month and always welcome new members.
