The Maine AFL-CIO Labor Reading Group invites you to meet (by Zoom) author Daisy Pitkin on Thursday, April 27, 5:30-7:00 p.m. Daisy—now lead organizer with the Workers United’s Starbucks campaign—wrote our current selection, On the Line. Her memoir recounts a hard-fought, often heart-breaking, 2003 campaign to organize mostly immigrant women industrial laundry workers in Phoenix AZ.

The work was exhausting, dangerous, and poorly paid. The workers were among our most marginal — often undocumented, Spanish-speaking, so insecurely housed they sometimes couldn’t give a mailing address. Helping these workers organize themselves and hold that organization together in a hostile, alienating labor-law environment took resilience, resourcefulness, and faith.

As we experience one of the largest labor upheavals in decades, On the Line shows how difficult it is to bring about social change, and why we can’t afford to stop trying. To pre-register for this session, please use this link.
