On Friday, July 29th, workers and community supporters will be calling on Hannaford to stop sourcing from farms with poor labor standards, and join the Milk with Dignity program.

Join them in solidarity at the Hannaford Headquarters, 145 Pleasant Hill Road, Scarborough, ME, 7/29 at 2pm! Please fill out this form if you would like to come!

Corporate owned chains, such as Hannaford, use their power to put downward pressure on dairy prices, squeezing farmers’ income while they pocket the surplus. Because of this, the dairy industry has relied on exploiting migrant labor for low pay, and poor working conditions.

Inspired by the Worker-Driven Social Responsibility model pioneered by Coalition of Immokalee Workers, Migrant Justice created the Milk with Dignity Program to address the issues facing the farmworkers. Instead of a traditional organized labor model, Milk with Dignity organizes farmworkers, consumers, farmers, and buyers to demand dignified wages, safe working conditions and housing in the dairy industry.

This model is built on the premise that companies have a responsibility to source from farms with dignified conditions and worker defined standards, and workers and consumers alike can harness their power to demand it from them. Milk with Dignity helps create a sustainable food system in the long run, as the farms who also join Milk with Dignity receive premium prices for their product. In 2017, Ben & Jerry’s was the first company to join the Milk with Dignity program, improving conditions for over 250 farmworkers.

Hannaford is the largest supermarket chain in Maine, and a major buyer of dairy products in Maine and the Northeast. Currently, the farmworkers producing Hannaford brand milk are suffering from unsafe working conditions, low pay, a lack of protections, and abuse. Migrant Justice is holding a rally at the Hannaford Headquarters this coming Friday, calling on them to join the Milk with Dignity Program. They are demanding that Hannaford ensures the dairy products in their store come from farms with safe working conditions, adequate pay and housing, and basic human rights.
