We all depend on the people who provide state services — from plowing the roads we drive on, caring for vulnerable family members or friends, answering 911 calls, staffing the state parks we enjoy with our families, and so much more.

Unfortunately, in recent years, low pay has created a pay gap between these state workers and their counterparts in private sector jobs, resulting in widespread understaffing across state government. The state is struggling to recruit and retain people to fill these crucial positions because the wages in many departments are not close to competitive. State employees are doing the best they can, but with 2,000 currently vacant positions across the State of Maine, they are simply not able to do everything that is needed.

We want to know how this impacts you. Please fill out this short survey and share with us how you are seeing the effects of short staffing on state services you rely on, or another way you have seen the effects of the pay gap.
