The Dr. Charles A. Scontras Center for Labor and Community Education and USM’s Department of Economics is sponsoring a talk by author Todd Vachon on Thursday, November 2 at the University of Maine’s Luther Bonney Hall 103, 85 Bedford St. in Portland.

In his recent book, "Clean Air and Good Jobs: U.S. Labor and the Struggle for Climate Justice," Vachon examines the “jobs vs. environment” discourse that pits workers against climate activists and discusses how to make a “just transition” from fossil fuels that compensates for the human cost when jobs are lost or displaced. As the book’s description states:

“Vachon profiles the workers and union leaders who have been waging a slow, but steadily growing revolution within their unions to make labor as a whole an active and progressive champion for both workers and the environment. Clean Air and Good Jobs examines the “movement within the movement” offering useful solutions to the dual crises of climate and inequality.”
