Bangor Daily News (BDN) Union Celebrates 1 Year Anniversary Amid Ongoing Contract Negotiations
Members of the Bangor Daily News Union (News Guild - CWA 31128) celebrated the first anniversary of forming their union this past weekend with an evening of bowling.
"The Bangor Daily News Union is celebrating one year since we won voluntary recognition. We're also marking six months since we began bargaining our first contract," said Chris Burns, President of the BDN Union. "There's still much work ahead of us, but we've seen meaningful movement on vitally important issues. We are prepared to continue this necessary work to make the BDN a place where talent is nurtured, loyalty rewarded, and careers made."
BDN reporters, digital editors, page designers, photographers and editorial page writers formed their union last year, citing concerns about pay disparities, destabilizing turnover and low morale. The BDN workers are affiliated with the News Guild of Maine (CWA 31228), which also represents employees at the Portland Press Herald, Kennebec Journal and Waterville Morning Sentinel.
