Brewer, Winslow, Lewiston and Portland!

Brothers, Sisters and Friends!

We hope you’ve been having a wonderful summer and are getting ready for a fun day of food, music and family-friendly activities at our annual Labor Day celebrations across the state!

The first Labor Day in Maine was held in 1891 and Samuel Gompers, president of the American Federation Labor, joined Maine workers to baptize the new holiday. As he told Maine Labor Day audiences, “wealth is a public trust, and the right to have something to say about wages and hours of labor pertains to the workers from whom the wealth comes.”

This year, we will continue that tradition of celebrating the working people who create the wealth and honoring those who sacrificed for the cause of workers’ rights. Our keynote speaker at the four events will be labor organizer José La Luz , who is most known for leading a successful grassroots campaign to achieve collective bargaining rights for over 120,000 public employees in Puerto Rico in 1998. In recent years Brother La Luz has been campaigning for Medicare for All.

Below is a list of this year’s Labor Day day events. W hope to see you there!
